In Iran zijn vijf arrestaties verricht in verband met de dood van de Iraans-Canadese journaliste Zahra Kazemi. Dat heeft het openbaar ministerie in Teheran zaterdag laten weten. Kazemi werd in juni gearresteerd toen zij op reportagereis was in Iran. In hechtenis is zij door de politie mishandeld, wat waarschijnlijk tot haar dood heeft geleid.

Het openbaar ministerie maakte zaterdag geen bijzonderheden bekend, zoals de namen van de arrestanten. Het onderzoek gaat door. De zaak-Kazemi heeft tot een diplomatieke rel geleid tussen Iran en Canada. De 54-jarige Kazemi overleed op 11 juli in een Iraans ziekenhuis aan een hersenbloeding.

Geoff Hoon, the British Secretary of State for Defence, was accused of threatening and insulting a photographer yesterday as he continued to face pressure over the death of weapons expert David Kelly.

Mr Hoon leapt out of his car at a junction, accused the man of harassment, and allegedly called him a "low-life scumbag". The photographer, Doug Mark, said Mr Hoon's Special Branch bodyguard later apologised, saying the minister was " under a lot of stress at the moment". The confrontation happened near Mr Hoon's home.

The Ministry of Defence said the altercation was caused by Mr Hoon's worry that his children were being photographed. But Mr Mark, who works for a local agency, said: "I was not taking pictures of his family. I showed him the frame on the back of the camera to show it was only his photograph. I felt very threatened by Mr Hoon. He is a big man, at least four or five inches taller than me, and he was leaning into my face waving his car keys, calling me a scumbag, demanding my film. He appears to have totally lost it. I have often photographed politicians, but I have never faced this sort of behaviour. We are local photographers, not the paparazzi. Hoon's Special Branch minder did not make any effort to help him."

Reuter's photographer Mario Linares (R) is attacked by demonstrators at a rally supporting the presidential campaign of former military dictator Efrain Rios Montt in Guatemala City.

A conservative group that supports President Bush is using an official Navy photo of the president greeting troops aboard an aircraft carrier to raise money. Citizens United for the Bush Agenda sent copies of the picture to about 30,000 people last month, along with a request for donations.

The picture was taken by a Navy photographer after Bush landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln in May to declare an end to major combat operations in Iraq. The photo was taken from a U.S. Navy website. A Pentagon spokesman said once the picture is posted on the Internet, it's in the public domain and can be used by anyone as long as the photo is credited.

Some Democrats complained that the trip, with the president decked out in Navy flight gear, had political overtones and that landing in a jet was a waste of taxpayer money.

French photographer Patrick Robert, who had his spleen and a kidney removed last week by ICRC staff, was evacuated on 23 July to Abidjan. An ICRC vehicle and surgeon took him from JFK Hospital to Monrovia’s main airport where he boarded an aircraft to Paris, chartered by the French government.

The U.S. military authorities in Baghdad issued photographs of what it says are the bodies of Saddam Hussein's sons Uday and Qusay on Thursday in an effort to prove to skeptical Iraqis that the feared brothers had been killed on Tuesday.

Klein - amper anderhalve meter - maar duidelijk dapper. Moet ook als je je mannetje wil staan in de wereld van Tourfotografen.

Meer dan twintig jaar geleden nam ze haar allereerste wielerfoto's en ondertussen is ze aan haar veertiende Tour bezig. ,,Er is nog een Franse fotografe die de publiciteitskaravaan schiet en een Mexicaanse die de finale doet, maar ik ben in feite de enige vrouwelijke fotografe die de hele wedstrijd volgt'', glundert ze trots.

,,Anekdotes? Hoeveel wil je er?'', lacht Beth Schneider. ,,In 1992 maakte ik een ongelooflijk verhaal mee. Ik zou een Touretappe achteraan op de motor volgen, maar een Belgische fotograaf had mijn plaats ingenomen. Ik bleef achter aan de start tot ik uiteindelijk een plaatsje achteraan in een ambulance kon bemachtigen. Niet voor lang, want even verder stopte die en stond ik weer te voet. Tot mijn verbazing bleek een gendarme bereid me op zijn motor mee te nemen. Wauw, dacht ik, maar ook dat duurde niet lang. Op de top van de eerste klim werd ik door hem gedropt omdat hij een jurylid moest oppikken. Uiteindelijk kon ik een plaatsje bemachtigen in de auto van een radiostation, maar tot overmaat van ramp begon mijn maag onderweg op te spelen...''

,,In 2000 moest ik in het ziekenhuis van Mulhouse met mijn knie onder de radiografie door de schuld van zo'n bodyguard. We stonden in een toegelaten zone foto's te nemen, maar een agent had dat zo niet begrepen. Hij trommelde enkele dikzakken op, die ons hardhandig verwijderden. Mijn knie kreeg harde klappen te verwerken.''

Costa was on a freelance assignment for the respected weekly news magazine Epoca when the fatal shot was fired. He was talking to a group of people at the entrance of a camp, set up by Brazil's Roofless Movement (Sem-Teto), on land belonging to German automaker Volkswagen.

Dinsdagavond is een straatrover opgepakt die in de binnenstad van Amsterdam een fotocamera van een toerist wilde stelen. Toen de toerist (26) door de man werd belaagd, hield hij het toestel stevig vast. Dit tot grote frustratie van de rover, die een paar klappen uitdeelde. Het slachtoffer rende weg, maar de 22-jarige straatrover ging achter hem aan.

Op het Damrak kreeg het slachtoffer nog een paar klappen, maar hij gaf zijn camera niet prijs. Plotseling koos de rover het hazenpad omdat hij schrok van een surveillerende motoragent. De toerist waarschuwde de agent, die de man wist te achterhalen en te arresteren.

Fotograaf Franco Gori van Dagblad De Limburger heeft bij de hoofdofficier van justitie in Den Bosch een strafklacht ingediend tegen agenten van het korps Brabant Zuid-Oost en tegen medewerkers van de Algemene Inspectiedienst (AID) van het ministerie van Landbouw. Hij werd op 4 juni in Budel opgepakt toen hij getuige was van de ruiming van hobbypluimvee, en werd opgepakt omdat hij geen gehoor gaf aan de oproep van agenten om het terrein te verlaten.

Een woordvoerder van de politie Brabant Zuid-Oost zegt dat de klacht nog niet binnen is. Gori vindt dat bij de arrestatie onnodig veel geweld is gebruikt. Gori, die bij zijn arrestatie letsel heeft opgelopen, heeft bovendien aangifte gedaan van mishandeling. Bij dit incident is hem naar eigen zeggen belet om verder foto's te maken.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said Wednesday Iran is well determined to push for efforts to discover the real cause(s) of the photo-journalist Zahra Kazemi. Talking to IRNA, Asefi reacted to the statements by the Canadian Foreign Minister as for Kazemi's death and said the remarks by Canadian FM on the death of an Iranian journalist were "unacceptable".

He commented on a move by Canada to recall its ambassador to Tehran and said recalling envoys by states for consultations on issues is a usual act in the diplomatic relations. He hoped Canada would refrain from launching "hasty and irrational" remarks that could compound the issue.

A Canadian daily wrote earlier Canada has recalled its envoy to Iran in protest to the Kazemi's burial in Shiraz, capital of Iran's Fars province. Mother of Iranian photographer Kazemi said earlier she wanted the body of her daughter buried in her hometown, Shiraz. In a facsimile sent to IRNA, she said, "In order to prevent any misuse of the tragic incident, I want my beloved daughter's body buried in Shiraz."

Het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam en het Centrum voor Beeldende Kunst in Breda gaan elk 5000 euro schadevergoeding betalen aan fotograaf Morad Bouchakour. Dit is woensdag afgesproken tijdens een kort geding bij de voorzieningenrechter in Amsterdam.

Foto's van Bouchakour raakten beschadigd tijdens vervoer van het Rijksmuseum naar het Bredase CBK. Voor de putjes en krassen in zijn werk eiste de fotograaf een schadevergoeding van ruim 50.000 euro, maar tijdens de urenlange zitting bleek dat de betrokken partijen het over de schuldvraag moeilijk eens konden worden. Om jarenlange procedures te voorkomen, besloot de fotograaf op het gezamenlijke aanbod van 10.000 euro van de musea in te gaan.

Bouchakour had de fotoserie Nederland viert feest gemaakt voor het project Document Nederland, een samenwerkingsverband tussen NRC Handelsblad en het Rijksmuseum. Medewerkers van dit museum stapelden begin dit jaar 35 werken op elkaar in een vrachtwagen die was ingehuurd door het kunstencentrum in Breda. Tussen Amsterdam en Breda raakten de foto's beschadigd. De musea zullen binnen twee weken het geld naar Bouchakour overmaken en de fotograaf mag donderdag zijn foto's in Breda komen ophalen.

Iran's official news agency says the Iranian-born Canadian photographer, who died while in Iranian custody, has been buried today in her hometown of Shiraz.

The report said Zahra Kazemi was buried in the presence of a number of government officials. It did not give further details. The funeral went ahead despite objections from Ms. Kazemi's son, Stephen Hachemi, who lives in Canada. Mr. Hachemi had demanded that his mother's body be returned to Canada where an independent autopsy could take place.

Canada has recalled its ambassador to Iran over Tehran's decision to bury Ms. Kazemi against her family's wishes. Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham said it directly disregarded her family's wishes and appropriate international behavior. He said the decision to recall Canada's ambassador is intended to express Ottawa's "complete dissatisfaction" with Tehran.

The Iranian Journalist Union announced plans to stage a strike on August 8 to protest the lack of press freedom in Iran. The Union is also planning to hold a memorial service for Ms. Kazemi.

The body of Canadian journalist Zahra Kazemi, who died in custody in Tehran, will be buried in Iran on Wednesday, a government source said, despite demands by Ottawa and her son for her body to be returned to Canada. The Iranian official, who declined to give his name, told Reuters that Kazemi's body had already been transferred from Tehran to her birthplace in Shiraz, southern Iran. He said the decision was in accordance with the wishes of Kazemi's mother.

Kazemi's son, who lives in Canada, told reporters in Montreal that he received no confirmation about his mother's imminent burial and said his 75-year-old grandmother told him on Tuesday she was "forced" by Iranian authorities to authorize the burial in Iran. "If they can bury my mother, we can also exhume her," Stephan Hachemi said. "I am not ready to give up. The Canadian government can ask for a response. They haven't got any," he said, adding he had no plans to go to Iran to bring his mother's remains back.

Canadian embassy officials in Tehran said on Monday that Kazemi's mother had signed a written statement ceding to her grandson's wishes for Kazemi's body to be buried in Canada.

Earth from the Air seen by Blind people, a new show by French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, offers blind people the chance to enjoy his work. The open-air exhibition is based on "Earth from the Air", a display of Arthus-Bertrand's photographs and later a book that sold more than two million copies and has been translated into 19 languages. The show opened Tuesday in the gardens of London's Natural History Museum alongside the giant photographs which thousands of visitors have admired over the past year.

Blind visitors can feel their way one by one through the 30 black and white pictures created out of a special material called cellulose acetate and placed on a massive rectangular structure next to the originals. A guide describes the shapes, the colours and the shadows as visitors discover the raised contours with their fingers.

Arthus-Bertrand is ecstatic: "To do that for the blind is an absolute dream for me because it makes me feel I am doing something useful. The exhibition was done to show that all of us including the blind are responsible for our earth."

Het Europees Parlement in Brussel mag zijn eigen vergaderpaleizen en zittingszaal niet fotograferen. Elke keer als dat toch gebeurt wil de architect, Boucquillon, een vergoeding. Het parlement zit omhoog met de kwestie, die een flinke streep dreigt te trekken door het voorlichtingsbeleid. Anderhalf jaar geleden al trok de Belgische auteursrechtenorganisatie SOFAM aan de bel bij het EP en sindsdien loopt tussen de twee organisaties een wat bitse briefwisseling.

Om problemen zoveel mogelijk te vermijden, riep de EP-leiding vorige maand de politieke groepen op geen brochures of promotiemateriaal meer te produceren met daarop afbeeldingen van de buitenkant van het parlementsgebouw of van de zittingszaal. ,,We moeten voorkomen dat het parlement stevige boetes moet gaan betalen'', aldus een intern briefje aan de fractiesecretariaten.

Brussel zoekt nog uit of Boucquillon echt de rechthebbende auteur is. Het publicatieverbod is niet zo strikt dat elke foto- of filmopname nu verboden is maar dan moeten er wel mensen op staan, de gebouwen mogen niet de boventoon voeren. Directeur Eddy Cochez van de auteursrechtenorganisatie SOFAM noemt dat 'te kort door de bocht'. ,,Een groep Japanners mag fotograferen wat ze wil, maar zodra het gaat om publikatiedoeleinden ligt dat anders. Dit is al in 1886 vastgelegd in de Conventie van Bern. Toch wel vreemd dat juist een parlement, dat zelf wetten maakt, dat niet weet.''

Sportfotograaf Soenar Chamid meldt vanuit een snikheet Barcelona (WK zwemmen) dat hij de D2H binnenkort bij het WK atletiek enkele dagen kan testen. Vooral de display met zijn mogelijkheden om het beeld te bekijken is een enorme verbetering ten opzichte van de Canon 1D, en ook de overige verbeteringen zijn verbazingwekkend, aldus Soenar.

Nikon has today made official their much rumored new camera. The D2H is a four megapixel digital SLR which can shoot continuously at eight frames per second. Its buffer is large enough for 40 JPEG or 25 RAW frames shot at this rate. The sensor used in the D2H is Nikon's first in-house designed sensor, capable of outputting data at a far higher speed than CMOS. The D2H supports an optional accessory which provides direct wireless transmission of images from the camera by WiFi, images are sent using the FTP protocol. The D2H has numerous other new features and improvements such as; 11-area Multi-CAM 2000 AF module, 37ms shutter lag, more viewfinder information and support for the advanced i-TTL flash lighting system.

Reporters Without Borders appealed today to all sides in the fighting in Liberia to avoid harming journalists after a French photographer, Patrick Robert, was seriously wounded in the chest and arm during clashes on 19 July between government and rebel forces on the outskirts of Monrovia.

It called on President Charles Taylor's government and the rebel LURD (Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy) to comply with the Geneva Conventions that protect civilians (including journalists) in war zones and noted that many Liberian journalists had been forced to flee the capital after being threatened by one side or the other.

Robert, who was working for the US newsweekly Time and the Sygma Corbis photo agency, was given first aid at the US embassy and then transferred to Red Cross emergency services, who removed one of his kidneys and part of his intestines. He is still in in the unit of intensive care. Sygma Corbis told Reporters Without Borders he would be sent to Côte d'Ivoire as soon as he was well enough and when the security situation allowed.

Top Liberian army officials claimed he was hit by rebel fire, but this could not be confirmed. Fierce fighting has raged in and around Monrovia for the past week and, according to the BBC, at least 500 civilians have been killed.

De Iraanse president Khatami heeft opdracht gegeven wettelijke stappen te ondernemen tegen de personen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor de dood van de Iraans-Canadese fotografe Zahra Kazemi. Dat heeft het Iraanse persbureau IRNA maandag gemeld.

Iraanse hervormers hebben maandag gesteld dat het regeringsonderzoek naar de dood van Kazemi niet toereikend was. Verscheidene hervormingsgezinde parlementariërs lieten weten dat er een nieuw en diepgravender onderzoek moet komen om onder meer aan het licht te brengen wie voor de dood van de fotografe verantwoordelijk was of waren.

Ook de Canadese regering reageerde lauwtjes op het Iraanse onderzoeksrapport van zondag. Een Canadese regeringswoordvoerder zei dat veel vragen onbeantwoord waren gebleven. De Canadese regering wil onder meer weten onder welke omstandigheden Kazemi een klap tegen het hoofd kreeg.

De Let Walter Zapp, de man die de Minox Mini-camera uitvond, is donderdag in zijn huis in het Zwitserse Binningen gestorven. Z'n camera was uiterst geliefd bij opsporings- en spionagediensten. Volgens de Duitse firma Minox kan Zapp zonder moeite gerekend worden tot de grootste pioniers in de fotografie, naast Ernst Leitz, Carl Zeiss, Oskar Barnack en Karl Kellner.

Zapp schreef geschiedenis met zijn uitvinding van de eerste piepkleine Minox-camera die in productie ging in 1938. De camera is kleiner dan een sigaar en lichter dan een aansteker, maar heeft een kwalitatief goede lens. Met zijn 8x11mm-formaat werd de Minox - in verschillende uitvoeringen - één van de meest gebruikte spionagecamera's ter wereld.

Volgens de CIA was de camera zowel makkelijk te bedienen als te verbergen in één hand. Het kon bruikbare foto's maken van documenten en was onontbeerlijk voor clandestiene fotografie.

In de Singaporese krant "The Straits Times" vandaag een uitgebreid artikel over James Nachtwey, inmiddels half doof van de explosies en het machinegeweervuur.

Iranian-Canadian photographer Zahra Kazemi died from a brain haemorrhage due to a fractured skull following a blow to the head, an official report into her death concluded without specifying how the blow was sustained.

"According to the pathologist Ms Kazemi died from a fracture of the skull, a cerebral haemorrhage and its consequences after either a hard object struck her head, or her head struck a hard object," the state television report said. According to the findings of a medical committee cited in the report "there are no traces of blows or (head) injuries" other than the fatal fracture.

The report includes an hour-by-hour development of the affair, starting with 54-year-old Kazemi's arrest on June 23 outside Tehran's Evin prison where she was taking photographs of protestors. It specifies she sustained the fracture in the 36 hours before she was admitted to hospital on June 27.

In a parliamentary debate Sunday over her death, one outspoken reformer pointed the finger at Tehran's puritanical public prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi for failing to prevent her death. "She was arrested and was hit and beaten. She had a brain haemorrhage because her skull was broken," said MP Mohsen Armin. "Instead of respecting the dignity of journalists and the reputation of the Islamic republic by punishing those who beat her, Mortazavi ordered her to stay in detention."

The boyfriend of actor Gwyneth Paltrow has been ordered to appear in an Australian court after allegedly smashing a photographer's car window with a rock. UK band Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin allegedly smashed the window of freelance photographer Jon Lister's car on the weekend. Police confirmed a 26-year-old English man had been ordered to appear in court on October 8.

Lister claims he had taken pictures of Martin surfing with his entourage yesterday morning. He says the frontman became infuriated and demanded he erase the pictures from the digital camera. Martin is then accused of running to Lister's car, bashing the windscreen and to have let down the tyres.

Time magazine photographer Patrick Robert suffered "life-threatening" injuries to the chest and arm in the crossfire between rebel forces and government militias in the Liberian capital of Monrovia. He was covering fighting at one of the bridges. He is being treated at a Red Cross trauma unit in Monrovia while efforts are made to evacuate him.
